Diary of DRAC

WHAT IS DRAC?

DRAC – Dormansland Road Action Campaign.
On 22 September 2009, 50 interested members of the Dormansland Community and Michael Sydney, our Surrey County Councillor and Robert Bisset, our local Councillor got together at Dormansland Memorial Hall to discuss our concerns about road safety in Dormansland. The meeting was lively and heartfelt. You can read the comments and questions raised, in the Minutes, which can be viewed at www.dormansland.org.uk . On that night DRAC was ‘born’, to consolidate action to make our village safer. Since the meeting, we have all been patiently awaiting the results of the Feasibility Study, commissioned last year to assess the road safety in Dormansland and make proposals. The Study was due to be completed at the end of 2009 and revealed to the public in early 2010. As we enter March, the current state of play is that we continue to await the study.

As the clock ticks, the DRAC is stepping up a gear and needs your help.

SLOW DOWN THE TRAFFIC, SPEED UP THE COUNCIL.

Traffic is driving through our village too quickly. Lives are at risk and it’s only a matter of time before something terrible happens.

Please click here to sign up and help us with our crusade to make Surrey County Council take action

DID YOU KNOW?

The highest recorded speed by the police of vehicles travelling in a 30mph zone in Dormansland was 59mph.

The highest recorded speed by our treasured Speedwatch volunteers was 76mph in a 40mph zone.

WHY BOTHER?

One child was knocked down on the High Street in June 2009. A week later, a motorcyclist came off his bike in the same spot. Regularly, traffic zooms through the village and it is scary. It feels like a miracle there are not more accidents and even fatalities. But it can only be a matter of time before there are. We want to act now to stop this.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Drive safely through Dormansland, please.

Go S-L-O-W:

S – Sign & send a postcard (and ask all your neighbours to)
L – Love life. Love our children. Lower your speed.
O – Offer your support

DRAC History
In April, Mr. Michael Taylor, a parent and resident of Dormansland, attended Dormansland Parish Council Meeting to ask for Members' support for a pedestrian crossing in the High Street.  Mr. Taylor said that he represented many residents of the Village, especially parents, in his concern for the danger associated with crossing the High Street.  He had been in contact with Surrey County Council and they had suggested that he gathered support from residents in the form of a petition for a pedestrian crossing.  The then County Councillor, Mr. Ken Rimington, suggested that Mr. Taylor present the petition to the Local Committee Meeting in July.

On 3rd July 2009, Mr. Taylor attended Surrey County Council's Tandridge Local Committee Meeting and presented a petition, signed by 99 residents of Dormansland, for a pedestrian crossing in the High Street.  Mr. Taylor received a very positive response from the Local Highways Manager and he was informed that safety improvements in Dormansland are considered a priority and funds have been allocated for this purpose.

Unaware of Mr. Taylor's petition, other parents had been working towards creating a campaign to lobby Surrey County Council for road safety measures.  This campaign increased momentum after a series of recent traffic accident 'near misses'.
On 22nd September 2009 the first public meeting took place.  The minutes of this meeting can be found in "Recent Documents" - top right hand side of this page.

July 2010
The Dormansland Road Action Campaign (DRAC) was set up in 2009 to persuade Surrey County Council to improve road safety in the village. Remember the postcards and posters? We made lots of noise and the Council listened. They have been out and looked at the case and agreed that proper crossing points in the centre of the village would be safer for pedestrians and slow traffic down. They came up with some options. That’s the good news!
However, the bad news is that recent cuts to Council budgets means that they really cannot fund this project. The only way for the village to get this done (and quickly) is for us to raise the money through local fundraising. The Council has offered to work with the village community to help us plan and develop the right solutions. We just need to find the money. They will help make it happen as quickly as possible.
This is an opportunity for the whole village to make a difference.  If we are able to raise £20,000 this should enable us to do one crossing.

The DRAC team consists of a few residents who were passionate enough about the cause to drive this forward.  We now need more members for the next stage.
